What would be a foreign language be without the humour expressions? As the most difficult part of understanding a new culture, humour expressions are standing on the highest level of a language. However,without this, you will never literally experience the real culture of a country. If there is one thing you should know, it is there would be no need to be afraid of this, just enjoy the essence of another language while imerging in a totally differet humor way.

Let's start it in a Haha Way!

The following materials are quoted from the English Class for Chinese.

我(wǒ)就(jiù)向往(xiàngwǎng)资本主义(zīběnzhǔyì)腐朽(fǔxiǔ)糜烂(mílàn)的(de)生活(shēnghuó)。

I'm only dreaming about leading a corrupt and fast capitalist life.

Why laugh? In the past time, Chinese government told people that the capitalist life was corrupt and rotten which has been a basic image,in our minds, of the capitalist country for a long time. However, this image has been greatly changed in recent years,although nobody dare to claim it in public. So the speaker just quoted the old fashioned expression to mock the Chinese government.

就(jiù)：adv. means I have nothing else to expect just to dream about...

腐朽(fǔxiǔ)糜烂(mílàn):corrupt and rotten.

有人(yǒurén)把(bǎ)牛(niú)的(de)胚胎(pēitāi)和(hé)人(rén)的(de)胚胎(pēitāi)放(fàng)在(zài)一起(yìqǐ)培植(péizhí)，会(huì)出现(chūxiàn)什么(shényāo)呢(ne)？难道说(nándàoshuō)是(shì)牛(niú)人(rén)？

Why laugh? In China, "牛(niú)” is quite popular used to express the meaning "great,giant level which cannot be reached by normal people. " as a adj. This is a typical humour in Chinese language using the tricky gramma"的" to change the meaning in a moment.Here,all the listeners thought they are goint to have the sublimity of the up-class.To everyone's surprise,there is a "外部特征-exteriors" hiding after "上流社会人士- up-class" which completely made the meaning of the sentence different and laughable.

Today Haha is going to show you a magic character called 囧jiǒng. Right now it is the "reddest" word among the Chinese new generation. Why?

Maybe just one year ago, nobody knew what this character is. But it became very hot and cool overnight with no reason...we chinese people,esp the youth are very much in favor of using this online chatting or daily communication.

囧jiǒng, originally means "bright" in ancient Chinese. But now,people basically take it as a symblol of a kind of mood because it looks like human's face when meeting problems.八,looks the the eyebrow, 口 is the mouth. isn't it lovely?

So what does 囧 mean after all?

囧：today  means depressed,helpless,poorly,bad luck or even losing face. 

eg：今天好囧啊，等了半天打不到的士。Pathetically,i waited for a long time but there's still no taxi.  

当我要付钱时却发现钱包忘带了，好囧啊！！！i found my wallet forgotten at home when i was paying,it was pretty embarrassing!!!

another you-can't-miss popular Chinese charactor should be "雷",yes,it is. you guys may have met this basic charactor.and its origial meaning is thunder,and usually goes together with verb"打"for example"外面正在打雷呢！"(it is thundering outside).But now haha gonna show you 雷 another fresh meaning.

see this sentence“听说她要结婚了，这消息太雷人了”it's said that she's gonna get married.such a shocking news!  so here 雷means to shock,to surprise.remember to use it as a transitive verb.

I'm so glad that you come by to my place, and I couldn't be happier if you would like to spend your precious time on digging out how does the Haha Way work. So here I'm honored to be your guide to show you what it is like in my Haha World.

First, I suppose that the music is still on when you are reading this passage. You can choose to click the button on the black music player at the left bottom corner if you cannot bear it anymore...

So, what is Haha? Everyone knows it. As what I have said before, it is a kind of laughter. But do you know how do we learners study Chinese in the Haha way?

Technically, it is a sort of learning method which can make you laugh like Haha when studying Chinese. If by any chance, you have studied Chinese for a long time, spending hours after hours studying Chinese every single day by repeating after tapes or videos of Chinese learning Program, you still cannot speak fluently or even cannot understand anything when Chinese people talking, plz do not blame yourself. It’s not your fault. It has nothing to do with your IQ or something, trust me, it is not your fault. By tutoring Chinese in person and on line for several years, finally Haha seems to find the mystery of learning Chinese. Believe it, or not, if you follow the Haha way, you can speak a good Chinese even better than the native speakers. Why not have a try? It won’t cost you anything, or maybe some laughter at most.Why are you still hesitating? Come with me.

Mystery1 : Where is the problem hiding?

Let me ask you some questions:

What is Chinese? Some people would probably say it is something we call it Mandarin or Cantonese. No, unfortunately for you to know, there are 56 dialects in China, all of which are called Chinese. So what are you learning now? For most of you, it is Mandarin. And this time, fortunately, Haha is tutoring Mandarin.

Here comes another question: Who speaks Mandarin?

Of course, Chinese! Are you sure? Or maybe some foreigners? Anything else? Some pandas?... There is a common sense which is supposed to tell you, that is “None of the Chinese Speak Mandarin in their Daily life.” Are you kidding? How could I believe your bullsh*t? Believe it or not, that’s the truth. Haha, as a honest Chinese girl who has lived here for almost 20 years, would like to tell you that I never talk with my parents or best friends in my hometown using Mandarin. We talk in our own Dialect. Now probably you want to know, what is the difference between those 56 dialects with Mandarin? The answer is “Huge”. And Huge lies in the both pronunciation and grammar fields. Chinese people from different places probably even cannot understand each other like you cannot understand them. I’m not kidding. That’s why they have to learn Mandarin.

Question 3: Who can speak Mandarin well?

That is the key question which can help you find where the problem is hiding. Don’t give me the answer like ”It is definitely the Chinese” after you’ve finished the last two paragraphs. Oh, I forgot to tell you something which is important for you to get the answer: The Mandarin is based on the Chinese Northern Dialects. Now, you can have a good guess who is the master of Mandarin. Yes, the northern people of China. I’m not telling you that the people in the southern part of China cannot speak good Mandarin, but they are not masters. The chances are bigger for you to learn Chinese well if you meet a northern Chinese people. Anyway, that is not my point. The secret I wanna share with you is something you should be aware of and vitally important, that is even we don’t talk in Mandarin, we still use it to write and read and make movies, anything appeared in Public, which means: we are learning Mandarin everyday.

Finally, we can get back to the mystery 1, where is the problem hiding? Shh…The cat is going to jump of out of the bag…The problem is The Material you are learning! Are you still repeating after the old fashioned Basic Chinese 100 sentences? Are you still watching the boring slow to death video Easy Chinese? Come on, we don’t talk like that. Even Mandarin is not my mother language, we still speak very fast with it. Be clear this doesn’t mean you should start with very fast Chinese. What I want to say is if you are intended to talk with Chinese or understand what they say, you have to use the right materials. The daily materials watched and read and learned by Chinese in their life. To understand Chinese, the modern Chinese, you have to know what they like or dislike, what kind of humor makes sense, what is popular in China, what is happening there. In one word, you have to learn Mandarin as a Chinese.

After solving the first mystery, you must be wondering and eager to know where you can get the materials....Haha!(this is a real laughter). I’m happy to tell you that Haha will take you there.

What do we eat?Of course,everybody knows the "moon cake",in Chinese we call it "月yuè饼bĭng". Each year the same time as the festival is comming, all the supermarkets are stored with various"月饼".The price could rise from several bucks to thousands per cake...

Yesterday,Haha saw a post on the wall of the washroom in Starbucks,on which wrote"Moonlight brews love with coffee"...What a romance... in the W.C ...The Chinese Version is "月yuè色sè摇曳yáoyè,咖啡kāfēi传chuán情意qíngyì(The moonlight is flickering,while the coffee is carrying my love".Personally speaking,I prefer the English Version, as the Chinese one lost the meaning of "brew"...Anyway,let me explain some words in this sentence."摇曳yáo yè"means flicker;sway,usually to describe the slightly shaking of the leaves or the way of women's walk.Remember it is basically used in the written language,especially the beautiful essays...It's a beautiful word, too beautiful to use in the daily oral language...It only appears in Haha language when H is going to create some romantic atmosphere...

And today,Haha is going to talk something about the Mid-Autumn Festival in China.

First, you have to know the Chinese expression of this Festival.

中zhōng 秋qiū 节jié:Mid-Autumn Festival.

中 is middle,秋 is autumn, 节,is festival. In English, it is also know as the moon festival. But donot try to  translate it as "月亮节",as there are only two ways to say the middle autumn day in China one of which is 中秋节 as what I have said before,the other one is "八月节"(八月：august) which is mostly used by the old people. The young generation like Haha are already not very familiar with that expression anymore...
